The Road Ahead
When the Republicans were creamed in 2006, a Republican friend of mine predicted a return to political prominence — the promiseland, I suppose — in 2008.
We know what happened two years later; for the GOP, it was an abortion en masse. The once mighty Republican Party, considered in the 1990s as untouchable and unsinkable, resembled more the Whigs.
Almost as soon as Barack Obama was elected, political chatter immediately turned to 2012; whom would the Republicans look to for leadership? The answered seemed ominous and gloomy; Sarah Palin was primed to lead the party despite the very obvious fact no one did more to sink the candidacy of John McCain than the ill-known Alaska governor.
But the chatter faded, though hasn’t fully ended. My fear is a Palin/Whomever ticket will further doom a party that is already quickly fading into irrelevance.
